Statistics Group

The statistics group space is an environment for its members to explore Statistics with its methods, software platforms, setups (classical as well as Bayesian), context areas (economics, sociology etc.) and organizations involved in pursuit of statistics like govt. statistical organizations and academic institutions.

The goal of this group is to build a good knowledgebase, and facilitate collaboration among members, thereby bridging the gaps between experts, students and its users.  It also lets users record voices in statistics through blogs, forum and the book Voices in Statistics.

Anyone who has some familiarity with statistics as a subject may contribute to the envisaged knowledgebase.

From coordinator's desk

Today, statistics tools have become indispensable for many disciplines such as medicine, psychology, education, sociology, engineering and physics, just to name a few. Statistics is also important in many aspects of society such as business, industry and government. Because of the increasing use of statistics in so many areas of our lives, it has become desirable to understand and practice statistical thinking. This is important even if you do not use statistical methods directly.

Need to modernize statistics course at Indian universities- part II

How to Teach Statistics

Generally we ignore “teaching method” section when we create syllabus for any subject at graduation or post graduation level (?). We think teaching methodology has non significant role (and knowledge of content is sufficient) for higher education. I feel major problem of higher education is not giving emphasis on research of teaching of topics belonging to particular subject (and incorporating outcomes of researches in their course curriculum).

Need to modernize statistics course at Indian universities- part I

Statistics is backbone of many subjects and planning. It has close links with mathematics, real life problems and computation. Recent changes in nature of problems and enhancement in power of computation, put serious challenges before statisticians. Statistics is in process of getting a different role (confined as tool for some natural and social science) in life what it had 20 years ago. It is in quest of a point of balance between mathematics and computation in the light of new real life problems, e.g.

Exploratory data analysis

Generally a sort module on descriptive statistics is covered in statistics course but  how to analyze through these tools, is ignored in most of the cases. After availability vast computational power, now some additional tools should be included in course of descriptive statistics. Since tools under descriptive statistics are not statistic only, it is better to call it Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA).

Challenges before statisticians

As member of statisticians group at yahoo, I saw a lot of my friends are searching statistical tools without posing problem clearly. I feel need of some fundamental changes in our orientation for using statistical tools in analysis.

Remark on Section on Statistical Thinking

As author of section on Statistical Thinking in book Voices in Statistics, I am glad to see a lot of discussion and collection of material on this topic. I am especially thankful to rktyagi which help me in writing Teaching Tips. Still section of simulation is empty and hope it will be soon filled. We are in search of a tools which may help in increasing feelings of variation.
